American Cockroach Signs in Your Home or Business

Cockroaches leave behind four main signs that may alert you to their presence. For instance, you may see them as they like to come out at night, so if you need a drink of water and turn on a light, then you may spot several bugs scuttling back to the darker areas of your home.

Some ways to identify them:

  • Droppings that have ridges and blunt ends
  • small, dark-colored egg capsules
  • Eggs underneath larger appliances

They measure about 38 mm long. The bugs also leave behind an unpleasant odor because they produce the aggregation of pheromones, which is a chemical. The smell is musty, and it will become stronger as the cockroach population grows.

Cockroach FAQ’s

1.) A One-Day-Old Baby Cockroach Can Run Almost as Fast as Its Parents

For reference, these babies are about the size of a speck of dust! So, not only are they fast, but they are also elusive, which is a dangerous combination for a pest known to transmit various diseases.

2.) The American Cockroach Has Shown an Attraction to Alcohol

Similar to other pests, this cockroach species is drawn to some alcoholic beverages, especially beer. They are most likely attracted by the hops and sugar present in the drink.

Other Cockroach Control Information

Detecting a cockroach within your business or home can be quite an unsettling experience. However, they are far more than just a nuisance. Cockroaches spread bacteria, harbor disease, and can cause serious allergic reactions, particularly in children. It’s important to be able to properly identify and understand why cockroaches present such a problem.

How To Identify

Believe it or not, there are actually 3,500 different species of cockroaches worldwide. A common species found within the U.S. is appropriately named the American cockroach. These insects are large, brown, and have a distinct yellow band located behind their head. As terrifying a thought as it is, this species also produces wings and develops the ability to fly as they mature (the horror)! They tend to be nocturnal unless the population becomes too large or they encounter some type of stress that forces them out of hiding.

Generally speaking, cockroaches prefer warm, damp, humid conditions. Which means they often take up residence in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, or sewers. Want to decrease your chances of coming face to face with a cockroach? Always be sure to remove dirty dishes from the sink, keep floors clear of food crumbs or water and dispose of garbage at regular intervals, before it accumulates.

Why They Are A Problem

Beyond being creepy, cockroaches are also dangerous as they pose a significant health risk. Spreading more than 30 different types of bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella, cockroaches can also trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions. Due to transmitting disease and bacteria, as well as the allergen proteins found on their body, cockroaches make living and working conditions highly unsafe.

How They Multiply

Once you’ve discovered a cockroach, it may seem as if they are multiplying every hour. While they don’t reproduce THAT quickly, they do develop and grow exceedingly fast. In fact, the typical lifespan is approximately one year and in that time, a female can produce 200-300 offspring or 6 generations. As a result of how quickly cockroaches can multiple, it’s imperative your pest issue is handled swiftly before the problem intensifies.

Why the American Cockroach is a Problem

Some people experience severe allergic reactions and asthma attacks when cockroaches are present because the insects have allergen proteins on their bodies. The bugs may also transmit diseases and can spread dangerous bacteria as well as human disease agents. The American cockroach can make living or working conditions unsafe. They are also hardy creatures that are tough to eradicate.
